Since I'm not a LUGNET member, I would like to know the benefits of becoming one. Also, do most of you guys have a tangible lego community near you?

I'm a LUGNET member: Member 2530The main reason I wanted it was for the ability to do a public setlist, and I found the process easier than at Peeron. (Which I have now imported my LUGNET setlist into my Peeron setlist.) It also lets you create a member webpage, though a pretty basic one. I started one, but never really did anything with it. It is however a good way to catalogue stuff for your personal reference, such as I did with my Pick-A-Brick buys, as you can see here. I also did my 4679 Bonus Boxes, though I never quite finished the last pieces, since they were unimportant ones with small quantities. I just wanted to keep a reference for myself of them. As for actual posting on LUGNET, I only have a handful of times. As you've undoubtly heard from everyone else who visits LUGNET, it is filled with arguing and disagreements and other negative things now. About having a tangible LEGO community near me: Not really. For those who don't know, I live on an island. Down Island (5-6 hours away,) there is supposedly a LUG...though it only has a few members I'm aware of. I've corresponded with a couple of them on occassion. On the mainland, in Vancouver, there is VLC. I visit their forums regularly, and talk to a couple of them occassionally. But they're just too far away from me to get involved with. -John "J1A3L5" Langrish.

I'm reviving this thread because I plan to establish a LUG in college. From what I know, no one here is currently part of a LUG in their community.
Jail, from what I see you only use LUGNET for archiving. What other features does LUGNET have besides a news/forum similar to the one at BL?
Btw, anyone been to Brickfest?

There's not really any special features we haven't been over mostly. Nothing important anyway. The main importance is that it's the center of the LEGO AFOL community for a lot of people, and virtually all important news is posted there.
About Brickfest - No I haven't, and I can't this year. (One of the days exactly falls on a day I arranged to work on months ago - A town event.)
Now, last year I almost made it to NWBC, otherwise known as the NorthWest BrickCon. In Seattle. But in the end I couldn't. It's at a slightly earlier time this year, so I hope I can this year, depending upon school things.
The main problem I have with the fests is that you can't be alone anywhere if you're under 18. For completely valid reasons of course, but it sorta turns me off. The good part is that there's a couple AFOL's who have said they wouldn't mind being my over-18 person for a while if I could make it.
Next year I won't be able to be at Brickfest either - I plan to be in LEGOland Windsor!
