For those who want to raise their own army, be warned...it ain't cheap. lol It's getting increasingly difficult to find the cavalry minifigs from the western sets these days.
The cavalry figures weren't good enough for me as they were, so i ended up purchasing mass quantities of light blue pants from bricklink. Confederates are harder to do since Lego never had sets that featured them. For the soldiers, the best thing you can probably do is buy a bunch of Max Villano minifigs, which by the way also look good in light blue pants. I have a couple pics of some soldiers, generals and officers up. However, I'm working on more figs to put up later, most notably the Zouaves. Hope you like them!

I got most of them last year and am probably partially responsible for their current scarcity on bricklink. Last year, I remember buying 2 or 3 lots of 10. Now I look and I think I remember seeing around 10 sellers with 1 or 2 minifigs.
