You can save as a different type of file on MS Paint, too...
By layout, do you mean desktop?

Well the layout so yes the desktop. And if you save it as a JPG file,it will turn out crummy.

Prt Scr is good way to start. It's button that automatically copies your CURRENT screen image and puts it to the clipboard. Then just open your phothoshop or similar program and paste it.
