The patents differ alot. You might be suprised but basically, anyone in the USA could copy the LEGO bricks. The patent TLG has bought is euro-only patent which is also bit.. hm.. stupid.
There is also one other thing. TLG has patented the "bolt and the cubes" method to build. That means that only TLG has right to produce bricks which under-part has the rounded. Anyone who has seen the MEGABLOKS bricks knows that their under-part includes cubic patterns. The mixture which TLG uses to produce the bricks (different kind of plastics, I think) is TLG patented tho.

I thought Lego bricks were ABS plastic, and that's certainly widely used...

Hi, not all pieces are made out of the same plastic.
Some minifigure accessories have much more "give" than others. The LEGO whip, for example.
While I'm not an expert, I think that pure ABS would be too brittle. I'm pretty sure it's mixed with something else, to make it slightly less rigid.

We would love for them to sue, but technically, they can't. Mega bloks TECHNICALLY doesn't break any patent law things... darn

And so the Canadian Supreme Court has ruled that Megabloks won the battle. After a long time of LEGO trying to get Megabloks stopped, the Megacrap won: yro.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/11/17/2145234&from=rssAll it means is Megabloks can still sell their sets, it doesn't stop LEGO from making sets.

MegaBloks and LEGO have always fight each other. Bit like Star Trek fans and Star Wars fans.

Hey, I like Mega Bloks. What's wrong with Mega Bloks? I'm a Mega Bloks fan, and I'm proud! Well you at lest have to have some LEGO to enter this forum. Unless it will be called Mega Bloks And More Mega Bloks. I have some Mega Bloks because my mother did't see spending a lot of money on a 3 year old. Mega Bloks have somewhat alike with LEGO. The basic brick was copyed but the minifigs of Mega Bloks are pretty dumb. Mega Bloks dont make the 1x3's.The only piece I like from them is the 16x8 base plate. -Steven329

Brr.. don't say that loud. I got some 'Bloks from my friend but I dumbed them to the next door neighbour's kid. I am bit "puritist" when it comes to LEGO bricks..

I ended up with some Bloks after my brother gave up his Lego bricks and I just sorted them out.... Not much of a loss. They don't stick to Lego bricks very well, and there are no technic bricks.
