...otherwise known as the Multi Core Magnetizer.
Name: Mega Core Magnetizer Set Number: 6989 Theme: M:Tron Year: 1990 Pieces: 486 Figures: 3
I managed to get this set, among a few other sets from M:Tron. While all the sets are cool, this one stands out.
I quite possibly have a new favourite set. It just has so many little features and stuff. For starters, the back opens up to have a small ship in the back. To each side of the back section there's little rovers. To each side of the front section is a crate, containing tools and stuff. In the middle of the back section there's a little container. To top it off, in the middle of all that there's a magnetic crane: I was very impressed to discover that each of those separate parts can all be reached, and extracted from the vehicle by only manipulating the crane - With ease!
The steering is very easy to use, and has a unique swingarm method. To top it off, the canopy flips up to the front, held down by the same steering cap!
The only slight disappointment with the set is that it only includes three figures: While there's a possibly four vehicles at once. (Mini Ship, 2 Rovers and main Vehicle)
If you ever have the chance to get this set, do it. You won't regret it.

How about that front screen? Worth of getting? By front screen, do you mean the trans-neon-green windshield? Yeah, it's a cool piece. I have them in trans-blue and trans-green too, I think. They're not the most useful piece, but if you can use them well they generally are pretty effective. In this set, it looks great. Where did you find this set and others alike? Through my closest LUG, VLC, I talked to a guy looking to sell a lot of sets: He has a list of 6 or 7 Blacktron II and M:Tron sets. I contacted him about them, it turned out he had some more too. It turned out he had other sets he hadn't mentioned yet, so I ended up getting 12 sets. It was among them. Even better, he says he has many more sets he still hasn't built, as they're in his mom's garage or something, and he's doing them bit to bit, so he'll let me know first! -John "J1A3L5" Langrish, who plans to do a daily review for a while.

$230 Canadian, shipped. Including all 12 mentioned sets. Well under MRSP price.

I thought it was US$80 or so when it came out. Are you talking about Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price or.... Bricklink Scalper's Suggested Retail Price

Paddy, it was $59 USD when it was out, I believe. That's what the LUGNET guide says, too. I'm talking actual price, back in 1990. When I say $230, that's including 11 other M:Tron and Blacktron II sets, including the Alpha Centuari Base.

Is there any good use for that huge tran-green canopy thing?

Yep, check out Bram's site: Well, it's not green, but if the ship was changed accordingly I'm sure it would be just as effective. The trans-green canopy is a cool piece, and looks great on the set, but are hard to look good on anything else. -John "J1A3L5" Langrish.

That is a nice use. I guess the advantage of big canopies is that you can put bricks on top of it. -Jamit

Well, I just got another 6kg+ of LEGO. In what I got was a few pieces from the Alpha Centauri Base, and a partly complete Mega Core Magnetizer. I basically got all the important unique parts: Wheels, crane assembly, windshield, figures, etc.
So, I went through the rest of the misc parts I got, and managed to get about a 80%+ complete set. So, I just placed a bricklink order to make it about 95% complete. After that, I just need a few more parts and I have two! ;D
My favourite set. I encourage all of you to shop around for one.

You always get the good deals! Its just not fair. But this set is not top on my list of getting. I would rather go and get a 1980-1994 Castle Set. I'm not really into Classic Space. At least not now, maybe later in my LEGO Life.
