OK--so while this isn't directly LEGO related, a friend of mine sent this to me, as I'm working on creating some sort of LEGO sorting machine--granted, it will only be able to sort basic bricks (of the same type), like 1x1, but even that would help... www.parallax.com/html_pages/resources/catapps/cat_mandm_sorter.aspIf you have broadband, be sure and download the video of the sorting machine in action, it's pretty cool...

Would it not take more time using that then just doing it by hand? Or am I just crazy? Maybe they should make one were you can just poor your whole bin in. That would be nice.

Personally, I don't find sorting by colour very useful, at least until you have large quantities of pieces. Personally, if you have your entire collection grouped by colour, it's just as hard to find a red piece among all-red than it is to find it among multi-colour.
Sorting by piece is the only way to go, in my opinion. Underneath that, I sometimes spread out into colour. Of course, one you've specified both piece and colour there's only a single type of piece left - No searching whatsoever!
I've also seen a mindstorms robot that could sort by colour...it was a long time ago so I'm unsure where it was, or if it's still even up...but I believe the person was indeed using it to sort their collection.

Sorting by color is the easy way out, and as such, presents a major headache that is waiting to happen. Yeah, my bricks are now just scattered back in their boxes. In the garage
