Well Finland beat Czech Republic 4-0.... (From wch2004.com)
HELSINKI, Finland (Ticker) -- The loss of coach Ivan Hlinka still must have been prominent on the minds of the Czech Republic.
Niko Kapanen of the Dallas Stars had a goal and an assist and Calgary Flames goaltender Miikka Kiprusoff faced just 12 shots as Finland skated to a 4-0 victory over the Czech Republic at Hartwall Arena in the opening game of the World Cup of Hockey.
Hlinka, who led his country to the bronze medal at the 1992 Olympics and the gold at the 1998 Nagano Games, was killed in an auto accident on August 16, just days before the Czech Republic opened training camp for the tournament.
The loss should have inspired the Czechs, who have one of the most talented offensive teams in the World Cup. But the team looked sluggish in its first game, recording five shots in the first 20 minutes, four in the second period and three in the final period.
Playing in front of a home crowd, Finland grabbed the lead for good when Jukka Hentunen tapped in a pass from Kapanen 6:33 into the first. Hentunen, who played 38 NHL games with Calgary and the Nashville Predators in 2001-02, led HC Fribourg-Gotteron of the Swiss League with 25 goals last season.
After a scoreless second period, Saku Koivu doubled Finland's lead early in the third. After Jere Lehtinen of the Dallas Stars kicked the puck to Koivu behind the net of Czech goaltender Tomas Vokoun of the Predators, the Montreal Canadiens captain tucked in a backhander near the left goalpost just 30 seconds into the period for a 2-0 advantage.
Goalless on its first four power-play opportunities, Finland finally cashed in when Kapanen tipped a wrist shot by Vancouver Canucks defenseman Sami Salo past Vokoun less than five minutes into the third.
Former Los Angeles Kings left wing Mikko Eloranta capped the scoring midway through the third, putting a rebound by Vokoun from the right faceoff circle.
Kiprusoff, who posted the NHL's lowest goals-against average since 1939-40 at 1.69 and led the Flames to a seventh game in the Stanley Cup Finals last season, had a much easier time than Vokoun, who made 30 saves for the Czech Republic.
Finland takes on Germany at Cologne Arena on Thursday, while the Czechs face off against Sweden at Globe Arena in Stockholm on Wednesday.
